[TCL004] Phenol red is used as a pH indicator since its color exhibits a gradual change from yellow to red over a pH range of 6.8 to 8.2. Phenol red solution is widely used in cell culture for monitoring pH changes. The living tissues flourish in an environment of neutral pH. Hence it is required that the pH of the medium in which the cells are cultured must be maintained at near-neutral range. On acidification, the medium will turn yellow indicating the need of replacement of medium or it is also indicative of bacterial contamination.
